How to Tie a Tie in 3 Steps

Updated: Aug 28, 2020

For most people, the idea of tying a tie is completely mystifying. However, after learning how, they quickly change their minds and realize how easy it really is.

The world of ties is an extraordinary one with millions of tie options and many methods of tying them. Some of the most common methods include the full Windsor, oriental, bow tie, and Nicky knot.

However, for the casual or rare tie wearer, the easiest knot that will give you the professional look that you desire is the four-in-hand knot.

This is how to tie a tie in three steps.

Step 1: Put the tie around your neck, so both sides hang down.

The three-step process begins by setting up the tie. Every tie length is different, so there will be some testing involved. As a starting point, when you have the untied tie around your neck, the thicker end should be almost twice as long as the short end as it is hanging around your neck.

You don’t want the knot to be too large, or it may look cartoonish or amateurish. Instead, you want a classical, triangle type design.

At the end, if you see that your knot is too bulky, then retry. This time, when you hang the untied tie around your neck, pull the thicker end down even further and try again.

Step 2: Wrap the big end around the small end.

Take the large end and put in at an angle in front of the small end. Wrap it around the small end and place the large end in front again. Make sure that the large end that is facing away from you is the front of the tie.

Now, pull the large end up through the hole between your neck and the rest of the tie pieces. As you pull the thicker part up in front of your face, you will see that the triangle knot is starting to form.

Pull the thick end down towards the floor but tuck it into that triangle shape and pull it all the way through in front of the thinner part.

Step 3: Pull the knot up to your neck and make adjustments.

The final step is to adjust the knot up to your neck. This will take some finagling.

As you bring the knot up towards your throat with one hand, pull down slowly on the large end with the other hand. You may also have to adjust the thin end a bit as well. You will have to alternate by pulling both ends as you bring the knot up.

Pull it up towards your Adam’s apple, and your knot should have that triangular shape.

Make any small adjustments to the knot as necessary.

Wrap Up and Final Notes

If done correctly, the thicker part of the tie should be longer than the thinner part by at least an inch or two.

Now, button the top buttons of your shirt for maximum professionalism.

Finally, go enjoy your wedding/promotion/job interview!!!
