3 Ways to Make a Fast Face Mask

Updated: Aug 28, 2020

If you are following the coronavirus guidelines provided by the government and your state, then you know that they are recommending that everyone wear a face mask when out in public.

Since real face masks should be reserved for those in the medical community, you will have to get your own version. Luckily, you can make a face mask using items you have at home.

Below are three easy ways to make face masks that don’t require a sewing machine.

Step 1: With a Reusable Shopping Bag

Many people are using a reusable shopping bag as the fabric for their masks.

This fabric is made of non-woven polypropylene, which is a breathable fabric that will also keep you protected. As a tip, get a reusable bag with the longest handles you can find because that is what will wrap around your head.

For the project, you will need a needle and thread, scissors, a ruler, and safety pins. You will also need pipe cleaners and at least 60 inches of ribbon if the handles on the bag are not long enough.

Step 2: Out of a T-Shirt

If you do not have a reusable recycling bag, then you can also make a face mask out of a t-shirt.

Ideally, you should use a cotton shirt because, again, it comes down to using a breathable fabric so you can wear it for a long period of time without issue.

Just like the bag method, you can either use a needle and thread or a sewing machine. It is a relatively easy process, and you can use one shirt to make several masks.

Step 3: With a Bandana

If you have a bandana/handkerchief at home that you rarely use, this is the perfect time to take it out and make it into a face mask.

All you need for the project is the bandana and two rubber bands or hair ties. You wrap the bandana around your face and tie it around back. The rubber bands (or hair ties) are used for either side of your face to keep that area in place.

Any handkerchief or bandana will do, so choose a soft one that you will enjoy wearing while staying safe.

Final Notes

Remember that you should go out sparingly until the state and federal guidelines are lifted.

If you must leave home, stay separate from large groups, and wash your hands after touching anything while out in public. The face mask is not necessary, but it can provide peace of mind.

Stay safe!
