3 Steps to Replacing a Shower Head

Updated: Aug 28, 2020

Adding or changing a shower head is one of the easiest home improvement projects you can undertake. The process is simple, and when you follow this three-step process, it will be done in minutes.

Step 1: Remove the old shower head.

The three-step process to replace a shower head begins by using a pair of pliers or an adjustable wrench to remove the leaking shower head.

Stand on a secure and safe surface and turn the back portion of the shower head and turn in a counterclockwise position. It may be tough to turn at first, but with proper leverage, it will begin to turn easily. You may have to use a pair of pliers.

Be cautious of a small amount of excess water that may come out once the shower head has been removed, especially if the shower was used the same day.

Step 2: Apply thread seal tape.

The second step of the process is to wrap thread seal tape or plumbers tape to the end of the threaded pipe that is coming out of the wall.

If you are installing a shower head from scratch, then you will simply apply the thread seal tape. If you are replacing an old shower head, it is better to clean off the existing bits of thread seal tape for a cleaner job.

When you wrap the thread seal tape around the end of the pipe, turn it in a clockwise direction, so you do not unravel it when you add the new shower head by twisting it counter clockwise.

Always remember the old adage. Righty - tighty, lefty - loosey.

Step 3: Add the new shower head.

The third step is to add the new shower head. You can use your hand to screw on the head most of the way and then use those pliers to tighten it up a bit. No need to go too crazy, just so it is snug.

Once you are done, turn on the shower to ensure that you tightened it enough so that there is no leakage from where you attached the head.

Wrap Up and Final Notes

Some people choose to wrap a towel the shower head so that when you screw it on, your wrench doesn’t cause damage to the head, but if you take care, you won’t see any marks.

There are many different shower heads out there so find one that suits your needs, or try another! Follow these three simple steps, and you will have a brand new shower head.
