3 Steps to Functional and Organized Closet

Updated: Aug 27, 2020

For many of us, the closet is the messiest area of our homes. A clean closet is essential, because it not only gives your home a cleaner look, but it can make getting up in the morning that much easier.

We have a tendency to keep old clothes that we no longer fit or just throw clothes around after they get washed just so they can avoid the hassle of getting organized.

However, organizing your closet is as easy as 1...2...3. Let's show you how.

1. Get Rid of What You Don't Need

The first step to a clean and organized closet is to get rid of all the extra fluff and just keep the clothes that you actually wear. This will save you space and make organization that much easier and faster.

You only have to do this once, and then you are halfway to a clean closet.

Take It Step by Step

If you are really serious about this project then the first step is removing everything and then sorting it out so you can put things in order when you return what you want to the closet. This way, you will know that you have physically touched every item.

Next, try on your older clothes. If they are too small and it is unrealistic that you would ever fit in them again, then donate them.

Don't forget seasonal items. You don't have to keep your winter coats in the closet all year around. Store them during the warmer months, and you will have more space almost immediately.

2. Know What Should Go Where

Most of us use hangers to hold and organize our clothes with maybe a few pairs of shoes underneath. However, if you really want to get organized and you have the closet space to accommodate, you can use other storage methods.

Rods

Start with using the standard closet rod to hang your t-shirts like you probably do now. It wouldn't hurt to color coordinate them, so the same colors are hanging together. This way, you will know where to look when wearing a particular pair of pants so you can match.

You should also hang your pants from hangers, so they stay straight and flat.

Shelves

If you don't have them yet, consider hanging shelves in your closet. Use shelves to place your folded sweatshirts. You can use shelf dividers to keep each style separated.

You can also use shelves to place your colognes, perfumes, pictures, and other trinkets that you old dear.

Drawers and Hooks

If you still have space in your closet, install some drawers and a set of hooks.

You can put socks, underwear, and other utility garments that you don't care to show off into drawers. If you have to put them out, fold the socks nicely and place them on a shelf as well.

Hooks are a great idea for hanging belts and ties so you can keep them intact and straight as you display them proudly.

3. Keep It Consistent

Now that your closet is gorgeously organized, make sure you keep it that way.

Whenever you do laundry or put something away, make sure to put it back in its place. Don't get lazy. If you chose to hang up your ties then make sure they are always hung up and fold your clothes like they were when you got them.

Only you can control the cleanliness of your closet, so take the extra steps, and you will always have what you need.

These are just a few tips for organizing your closet. Do you have any ideas that have really worked for you? Mention them in the comments.
